Acid Gas Storage in a depleted gas reservoir – A fit-for-purpose solution to overcome the environmental challenge.
Ad Terra Energy SA, an independent consultancy based in Geneva, Switzerland, has conducted a comprehensive technical study to explore alternative methods for handling acid gas. Our investigation delved into the stacked reservoir formations within an operator's field to pinpoint a suitable site for acid gas injection and storage.
Despite progress, certain technical uncertainties persist, necessitating a phased approach to de-risking and project maturation. This involves strategic appraisal well drilling, extensive data acquisition, and laboratory analysis. Concurrently, ongoing engineering studies aim to enhance understanding of storage capacity, analyze acid gas plume kinetics through advanced 3D modeling—incorporating geomechanical and geochemical interactions—and refine estimates of expected acid gas flow rates based on gas sweetening plant modeling, among other activities.
Acid gas injection represents a mature technology aligned with the anticipated acid gas volumes in the field, offering a complex yet operationally feasible solution to mitigate environmental concerns effectively.
