Hydrogen Testing of Seals - Theory vs. Real Life

24 Oct 2024
Systems Integration and Infrastructure

Many claim their sealing materials to be "H2-ready". However, real life conditions in hydrogen applications are often more challenging than what typical standards require. Many times, the exposure to real life conditions can jeopardize the whole system.

The challenge lies in the interaction of the molcules with sealing materials. For metals, the effect of hydrogen embrittlement is well known. However, little attention has been paid to elastomers and plastics, which are commonly used as sealing materials. For hydrogen storage and transport, high pressures and extreme temperature situations must be handled by these materials.

This presentation will explain the relevant material properties for sealing and how they are influenced by Hydrogen. Furthermore, it will be shown how big the gap between standard tests and real life conditions can be.
