Is CCS in the German North Sea feasible? Insights in the German funded Project GEOSTOR

24 Oct 2024
Carbon Capture, Utilisation, Storage & Blue Hydrogen

CCS and CCUS are acronyms that have caused resistance in Germany for many years. In fact, the current legislation still prohibits sequestration in onshore as well as offshore sub soil formations. Nevertheless, the IPCC has declared that CCS is required to help reduce unavoidable CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. As a result, since 2021 the German government has allocated more than 20M Euros to CDRmare, a consortium of six projects. One of the projects, GEOSTOR, aims to evaluate if CCS in the German North Sea is geologically and technically feasible and cost competitive compared to rising costs for emission certificates. The Engineering Consultants from Fichtner are a partner of GEOSTOR and are responsible for the technology and cost part of the study. As such, the talk will introduce the GEOSTOR project and will focus on technology and cost aspects.
