What Are DLC and PVD Coatings?

  • Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) Coatings: These coatings, like diamonds, are known for their hardness and wear resistance. DLC coatings also provide low friction and excellent resistance to corrosion, making them ideal for high-stress environments like those found in hydrogen fuel cells.
  • PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) Coatings: PVD is a process that deposits thin films of material onto a surface to improve its properties. This can include improving conductivity, protecting against corrosion, and enhancing wear resistance, all of which are crucial for fuel cell components.

Check out our 200 nm Au sputtered glass bowl, the complex geometry poses an easily surmountable challenge for our noble metal coating systems. Creating a scratch-resistant and durable layer of Au across the glass without an adhesion layer.

The Benefits of DLC and PVD Coatings in Fuel Cell Technology

1. Enhanced Durability and Corrosion Resistance

Hydrogen fuel cells operate under harsh conditions, which can lead to the corrosion of critical components over time. DLC and PVD coatings act as protective barriers, shielding components from chemical attacks, extending their life, and reducing maintenance costs.

2. Improved Electrical Conductivity

Efficient fuel cells require optimal electron and proton flow. PVD coatings, particularly those using materials like platinum or other conductive metals, can enhance the conductivity of electrodes, leading to improved efficiency and power output in fuel cells.

3. Minimized Friction and Wear

In any mechanical system, friction can cause wear and tear, reducing the longevity of components. DLC coatings offer extremely low friction, which minimizes wear on moving parts and ensures smoother operation, particularly in components such as pumps and seals within the fuel cell system.

4. Cost Efficiency and Material Optimization

Using advanced PVD techniques, fuel cell manufacturers can apply coatings that maximize the performance of expensive catalysts (like platinum) while reducing the overall material use. This lowers costs and enhances the fuel cell’s sustainability profile.

5. Customizable and Versatile

DLC and PVD coatings can be customized for specific applications, whether for high-temperature environments, chemical resistance, or electrical performance. This flexibility makes them ideal for the evolving demands of hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Why Intlvac?
