80% hydrogen power was achieved by Extreme E at Hydro X Prix
It has been revealed by Extreme E and ENOWA, that during the Hydro X Prix, 80% of the power produced, was generated through using hydrogen fuel cells.
This event took place in Scotland over one weekend and for it, ENOWA provided 700kg of green hydrogen, whilst Kaizen Clean Energy was the company to bring the fuel cell technology. Throughout the event, the race site managed to use the 11MWh produced to support charging, catering and event control power.
So far, during its last four X Prix, Extreme E has been able to produce 25MWh, through the use of green hydrogen fuel cells. Now that this has been proven to be successful, future plans have been created around increasing energy production and these ideas will be put into place at the company’s upcoming races in Sardinia.
It was in 2023 that Extreme E announced their future plans for an all-hydrogen off-road racing series, which will take place in 2025. Once this was agreed upon with Fédération Internationale l’Automobile (FIA), it was stated by Extreme E CEO, Alejandro Agag, that Extreme H will “demonstrate that hydrogen is a viable technology for the future, and also for racing.”
Managing Director of Extreme E, Ali Russel, spoke about the 11MWh produced across the Hydro X Prix being “equivalent to the energy required to power 1,000 homes in the UK.”
Russel mentioned, “Our vision is always to bring technology to the forefront that can make a dramatic shift in how we approach sustainability to improve the planet, and Extreme E has always been a pioneer in developing innovative solutions to combat the climate crisis.”
