A collaboration between Fabrum and King Watercraft will focus on designing hydrogen-powered RIB

Fabrum and King Watercraft are two New Zealand firms who have worked together in order to design a hydrogen-powered rigid inflatable boat (RIB). This product will be specifically designed to be suitable for tourism, as well as commercial and leisure activities.

The boat that has been created includes 18kg of 350 bar hydrogen gas and this is supplied to a fuel cell, whilst also maintaining charging to a battery bank. This battery bank is used to power both of the electric stern legs.

So far, it has been planned that the H2Ocean boat will be set to begin sea trials in 2025. It has also been reported that the boat can be “adapted to suit the environment and operations of the end user.”

On top of this, both of the New Zealand-based firms stated that, ‘the boat can carry up to 12 people and will likely be used for tourism and ferrying activities or fewer people and specialist equipment for coastguard, servicing, and event-based activities.’

Fabrum’s Executive Chair, Christopher Boyle, said that the ‘hydrogen propulsion can support “a new future pathway for the marine industry to decarbonise.”’

Boyle commented, “This initiative has added significance as our companies are based in Christchurch, fast becoming known as the hydrogen city of New Zealand.”

Founder and Managing Director of King Watercraft, Will King, added, “For over 10 years, we have focused on producing bespoke RIBs designed specifically for the needs of our customers in New Zealand and beyond. With a focus on being at the forefront of sustainable propulsion, the shared values of King Watercraft and Fabrum brought this idea to life and together, this project offers a lighter footprint for the marine industry here and around the world.”
