A developer in Singapore has created an original fuel cell solution for the maritime industry

Through an agreement with Shanghai Hydrogen Propulsion Technology (SHPT), it has been announced that Sydrogen Energy will be introducing new technology to the maritime industry. This technology will be a 250kW hydrogen fuel cell and it is scheduled to join the industry in 2025.

The purpose of proposing this technology to the industry, comes from Singapore’s aim to decarbonise its maritime sector. This aim was created once the country established their goal to reach Net Zero by 2050. This goal also encompasses the country opening a new harbour craft in the Port of Singapore and they hope that this will be possible by 2030. The plan for this facility, is for it to be fully electric, able to use B100 biofuel or for it to be able to work with Net Zero fuels.

Furthermore, another hope for this facility, is that it will be scalable from kW to MW, so that it can be suitable for small and large vessels. Designing it this way, will also make the facility capable of accepting reformed fuels. Plus, the MZ250N will work by converting hydrogen from various sources and efficiently produce zero-emission electricity.

Altogether, it is planned that this system will include Sydrogen’s metal biopolar plate technology, SydroDIAMOND®. This technology is durable, includes high-performing components which will come in useful for the fuel cell stack, a fact which was stated by the company. Finally, the fuel cell is expected to enhance the longevity, as well as the efficiency of maritime systems.

To ensure that this plan is successful, a collaboration has begun between Sydrogen and Singapore shipbuilders. This collaboration will focus on the system currently under development and soon the system will be globally marketed, with the aim of supporting the needs of vessel builders, based around the world. Aligning with this goal, before it is ready for the market, which it will be by 2025, the companies will put the system through a series of rigorous tests, including a type approval certification with classification societies. This test will make sure that the system properly complies with all of the necessary maritime standards.

Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Eng Dih, commented, “Through a slew of initiatives both on shore, and at sea, the MPA is working towards the digitalisation and decarbonisation of the global maritime community.”

General Manager of SHPT, LU Bingbing, said, “Through the combined technological strength and market reach of Sydrogen and SHPT, we will create attractive and advanced fuel cell systems for the global maritime market.”
