An electrolyser demonstrator is being installed at MAN Energy Solutions’ performance centre by Quest One

Construction has begun for Quest One’s demonstration plant, which is for its Modular Hydrogen Platform (MHP) PEM electrolyser. This electrolyser will be based at MAN Energy Solutions’ Augsburg site in Germany.

Now that this phase of the project has begun, during 2025 the plant will be assembled and then the first test operations will be held in 2026. It was in last December that the two companies were able to install the freshwater treatment for the plant.

The plan for the 10MW electrolyser, will be for it to generate data within test operation conditions, as this will ‘enable “comprehensive optimisation” of the plant operations.’ It will also aid in the assembly and service part of the electrolyser.

As of mid-2025, it will be possible for any potential customers or project developers to visit the demonstration plant. This has been allowed as it will provide them with important insights and information about the construction phases, inner workings, dimensions and infrastructure.

Right now the electrolyser solution includes a scalable and modular design with 10MW blocks which can be combined for green hydrogen production. This has a range of ten to several hundred megawatts.

Moreover, this development has received funding as part of the PEP.IN research project. This project is a sub-project of the H2Giga hydrogen lighthouse initiative which is currently being undertaken by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Chairman of the Advisory Board of Quest One and a Member of the Executive Board at MAN Energy Solutions, Jürgen Klöpffer, commented, “It is essential to have industrial-scale electrolysers to meet the huge demand for green hydrogen in the future. With our new hydrogen demonstration plant we will show that the technology for industrial-scale hydrogen production already exists. Prospects can now experience these advantages at our demonstration plant.”

Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Quest One, Michael Meister, mentioned, “The scalable system can be flexibly adapted to increasing hydrogen demands as the industry ramps up. The demonstration plant is an important means for us to further optimize the performance and operating parameters of the MHP. This will ensure that our products continue to produce green hydrogen in a reliable and efficient way in the future.”
