Environmental approval has been provided to a 10MW green hydrogen project based in Chile

A 10MW green hydrogen project which is based near Valparaíso, has been provided with environmental approval. This project was created by a Chilean LNG firm, GNL Quintero and Acciona Energía

The Chilean Corporation for the Promotion of Production (CORFO), provided the project with a subsidy worth $5.7m. Furthermore, it has already been planned that the project will be built on GNL Quintero’s existing premises which are located in Quintero. Currently the expectation of this plant, is for it to produce an estimated 1,600 tonnes of hydrogen on a yearly basis.

On top of this, GNL Quintero has revealed plans to source water from an existing network that is located at the Quintero LNG Terminal facilities. To do this, the company will use a ‘certified renewable energy supply contract’ through connection to the national grid.

Along with the environmental permit, throughout the duration of this project, the companies have also been focusing on advancing project engineering, electrolyser selection and finally, offtake discussions with prospective end-users.

Right now, the company hopes that by 2025, the project will be able to host 4-5GW of green hydrogen production. From there, the company hopes to increase this to a production rate of 25GW by 2030. Through gaining this ability, Chile now hopes to be able to use its abundant renewables, in order to produce what could be some of the cheapest green hydrogen around the globe.

The companies stated that, ‘the Environmental Assessment Commission (COEVA) of Valparaíso “unanimously” approved the project which plans to supply industries in Bahía Quintero-Puchuncaví.’

A statement mentioned, “If the investment conditions are met, it is contemplated that the construction and technical tests will be developed during the next year.”
