Ferrari CEO is looking to work with supercars that run on e-fuels
Benedetto Vigna, the Ferrari boss has recently announced that he can see a future for environmentally friendly e-fuels and hydrogen powertrains within the company’s models down the line. He has made his aim, to use motorsport to develop both technologies, clear.
This announcement was made whilst Ferrari is currently preparing to unveil a long-awaited successor to the LaFerrari hypercar. This car was manufactured to use a similar hybrid drivetrain to the 296 and SF90 supercars, however in this version, the power is ramped up to the unprecedented levels.
At the moment the kind of engine that the car uses, is not known, it could be a V6, V8 or V12. However whilst the type of engine is not known, it has been suggested through Vigna’s comments, that the engine could have been engineered to run on e-fuels.
The current project is codenamed F250 and it is going through advanced on-road testing and the expectation is for it to be launched next year.
Vigna said he believes carbon-neutral fuel will, “become more and more a reality.” He said: “We are working with partners for 2026 for carbon-neutral fuel in Formula 1 [as part of new technical rules] and usually technologies start out on the track and migrate to the road. We believe there is still a valid way forward for ICE cars and this is going to be supported by the development of carbon-neutral fuel.”
Vigna went on to speak about his interest in hydrogen technology and said, ‘the firm is researching the fuel type: “We do not see it before 2030. I believe as well as that, the racing space can always be the first place for adapting technologies.”’ But along with this, he mentioned, “hydrogen could be a good option for the future.”
A previous statement made by Vigna, indicated that he thought the idea of using sustainable fuels as a way of keeping combustion-engine cars on sale past 2035, could be a positive solution. This statement was made after the European Commission having proposed to allow ICE engines to remain on sale, as long as these vehicles are only running on e-fuel.
Vigna commented on this stating, “ICE still has a lot to do,” he expanded on this saying, ‘development and adoption of e-fuels was occurring quicker than anticipated, and they could serve as a “reinforcement” of the brand’s carbon-cutting strategy.’
