The first green hydrogen plant in Denmark has been opened by European Energy
Denmark welcomes its first green hydrogen production facility. This facility will be inaugurated by European Energy and it will be based in Måde, which is located near Esbjerg.
The construction of this project was completed in June and it has been announced that the facility is now operational. So far, the first of three electrolysers has now started producing hydrogen.
Currently the electrolysers are being supplied by Stiesdal, the floating offshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture firm. As the supply is coming from this firm, it is expected that the capacity of the electrolyser will expand to 12MW through the process of adding a further two systems throughout 2025.
The plan for the hydrogen that is produced by the Måde plant, is that it will be supplied to Port Esbjerg, as well as a 'world-leading company in industrial gases.’ It has also been planned that any excess heat from the facility, will be used for district heating.
Furthermore, the firm is already in the process of commissioning its green methanol plant, which is located in Denmark, specifically Kassø. This location is where the company expects to start production this year.
European Energy CEO, Knud Erik Andersen, commented, “With the start of operations at Måde, we can deliver green hydrogen to the market. This achievement demonstrates that the transformation of our energy systems is not just a distant – vision – it’s happening right now.”
Executive Vice-President and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy, Emil Vikjær-Andersen, mentioned, “This facility is just the beginning. Through the many learnings we have captured by designing, constructing and commissioning the plant, we will be able to reduce cost and time for future plants while improving project economics.”
