A green methanol project in Australia has selected thyssenkrupp nucrea as its electrolyser supplier

It was recently announced by the 260MW green hydrogen-to-methanol project, that they have named thyssenkrupp nucrea as their preferred electrolyser supplier. This project will be based in Tasmania, in Australia.

ABEL Energy, the project development team working with the Bell Bay Powerfuels project, has named the German electrolyser OEM as the preferred supplier to the project. This innovative new project has set out its aim to create 300,000 tonnes of green methanol from green hydrogen every year. The green methanol that is produced will be put to use within the shipping industry.

The new project is scheduled to begin operations in 2028 and the plant will operate through combining water electrolysis with synthesis gas that is obtained from a biomass gasifier, in order to produce green methanol. This entire process will be performed through the use of renewable power that is created from hydro and new wind production assets.

Alongside this project, after thyssenkrupp nucera completed their IPO in July of 2023, they were able to meet the Frankfurt Stock Exchange with a valuation of more than $2.7bn. Furthermore, they were also named the supplier of electrolysers by NEOM for their 2.2GW green hydrogen project, as well as H2 Green Steel’s 700MW hydrogen plant.

Chief Technology Officer at ABEL Energy, Rhys Tucker, commented that, ‘the company’s Scalum-branded alkaline electrolysers are “well suited” to the Bell Bay project’s requirements.’

CEO of thyssenkrupp nucera Australia Dr. Johann Rinnhofer, mentioned that, ‘the project underscored the relevance of selecting electrolysis technology which matches the operational and economic needs of large-scale hydrogen projects.’
