Hexagon Purus will supply hydrogen storage and battery packs to Toyota’s hydrogen powertrains

Hexagon Purus will supply hydrogen storage and battery packs to Toyota’s hydrogen powertrains

A new agreement has been formed between the Norwegian-based company, Hexagon Purus and Toyota North America (TMNA). This will involve Hexagon Purus supplying hydrogen storage and battery packs to TMNA, in order to aid Toyota’s serial production of their heavy-duty fuel cell power trains.

After TMNA’s last project, which involved creating a heavy-duty fuel cell powertrain, to help truck OEMs and operators achieve goals focused on meeting strict emissions regulations being put down in the state. California Air Resources Board (CARB) granted TMNA with a Zero Emission Powertrain (ZEP) executive order.

Now that this order has been made and Hexagon Purus has agreed to provide supplies that will help Toyota achieve this goal, a plan has been created. This involves Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) assembling the dual fuel cell modules, ensuring to include Hexagon Purus’ hydrogen storage and battery systems within the modules. Once these modules are built, they will then be sold to heavy-duty truck manufacturers and they will be intended for use within Class 8 trucks.

This project is not the first time Hexagon Purus and TMNA have worked together, as these companies have collaborated over Class 8 fuel cell electric powertrains since 2017. It was throughout previous projects, where the companies put together the proof-of-concept Alpha trucks, which would then be used in Californian ports.

Chief Engineer, Advanced Product Planning Officer, TMNA, Jay Sackett, said that by ‘combining Toyota’s fuel cell stacks with Hexagon’s components, the company can provide a “one-stop solution” for customers.’

Executive Vice-President of Battery Systems and Vehicle Integration at Hexagon Purus, Todd Sloan, commented, “We are entering a new era in our collaboration with Toyota supplying components for its fuel cell powertrain kits, to help pave the way for zero emission commercial transportation.”
