Hydrogen will be distributed through East London pipeline network by H2Terminals

A plan for H2Termianls to supply hydrogen through Cadent Gas’ East London Hydrogen Pipeline has been set in motion. When the hydrogen has been supplied, it will then be available for use to local industrial companies who are aiming to find opportunities to decarbonise.

Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), it has been agreed that the hydrogen from H2Terminals will come from the companies offshore Energy Island project. This project is located in the North Sea. During this process, the hydrogen will be liquefied and then it will be transported by specialised vessels and this journey will take it to the Thames Estuary.

It has been stated that the pipeline, part of cadent, SGN and National Grid Gas Transmission’s joint venture Capital Hydrogen, has the capacity to hold a maximum of ten tonnes of hydrogen on a daily basis. This will be the case once the equipment is fully operational in 2030. Last year, Jacobs was chosen to conduct the pre-FEED studies around the 56-mile network.

So far, it has been made clear that the East London Hydrogen Pipeline will be purposefully designed to connect hydrogen production sites near Tilbury, as well as the Thames Enterprise Park, to Central East London based industrial consumers.

CEO of H2Terminals, Gerry Wilkinson, stated that, ‘the partnership with Cadent represents a “watershed moment for green hydrogen infrastructure in London. By combining H2Terminals’ production capabilities with Cadent’s network capabilities and their new 100% hydrogen pipeline, we’re not just delivering cost-effective hydrogen solutions – we’re accelerating the industrial transformation needed to combat climate change.”

Thames Estuary Envoy and Chair, Kate Willard OBE, mentioned, “The Thames Estuary is rapidly becoming a focal point for hydrogen innovation, and the East London Pipeline is a crucial part of this transformation.”
