The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai’s Government, have decided to trial the use of hydrogen-powered buses throughout Dubai.

This agreement was signed with Swaidan Trading Company by, Ahmed Hashem Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, and Swaidan Al Naboodah, Managing Director of the Swaidan Trading Company. The agreement laid out the plan that the test for the bus will take place on urban roads in the emirate and it will be graded on how well it suits the climate conditions of Dubai.

The agreement also outlines that the hydrogen will be supplied by ENOC, whilst Zhongtong Bus Holding, a Chinese company, will provide the fuel cell system intended for the vehicle. Once these have been collected, the initiative will also have the responsibility of testing the challenges and opportunities presented by hydrogen production and supply.

In order to gather as much data and feedback as possible, in order to improve the system and make it suitable for Dubai, the initiative will collect driver and customer feedback. This will allow the company to determine which areas work well and which need improvement, so that they can continuously improve the bus service as it runs in Dubai.

CEO of RTA, Bahrozyan commented, “These buses represent a sustainable future for transportation in terms of technology and environmental impact, as they rely on hydrogen as a fuel source for long-distance travel. Hydrogen is known for its unique properties – it is lightweight and has three times the energy density of diesel fuel while producing no harmful environmental emissions.”
