India’s first hydrogen refuelling station has been created by Amara Raja

India’s ‘first’ hydrogen refuelling station has been launched by Amara Raja, which is a huge milestone, especially when it comes to supporting NTPC’s fuel cell-powered bus initiative. The station has been created in Leh, Ladakh.

Already there is a plan for NTPC, the Indian power utility company to use the station, with the intention of fuelling five of their hydrogen-powered buses. The reasons behind this decision, come from the fact that these buses will be part of a trial they will soon be running within the city. It was only last year that the firm placed Leh’s initial fuel cell bus into operation as part of a three-month field trial, so it is evident that this project has progressed excellently, as has the hydrogen industry within this country.

It has been made clear that the facility will have the capacity to distribute 80kg of green hydrogen on a daily basis. This in itself is a very significant milestone, as after two years of development, this facility has now been completed, even after it experienced ‘multiple challenges,’ as stated by the Amara Raja Group company.

Amara Raja stated, “Here’s to taking a significant step towards advancing India’s green mobility goals and a sustainable future powered by Amara Raja.”

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, highlighted how the initiative aligns with the company’s broader vision and he emphasised the ‘need to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen in public transportation.’

Modi commented, “In such a crucial sector, it is important for domain experts to lead the way and work together. Particularly, I urge the global scientific community to come together to explore various aspects. Scientists and innovators can suggest changes in public policy to help the green hydrogen sector. Exploring such topics together will greatly help the green energy transition across the world. We can achieve anything when we are together. Let us work to accelerate the development and deployment of green hydrogen.”
