JV Agreement over Green Hydrogen Transition and Renewable Energy in India created between BPCL and Sembcorp
)
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited have decided to explore renewable energy and green hydrogen projects throughout India. They will do this through a joint venture (JV) agreement, with the aim of supporting India’s energy transition and development goals.
Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) and it is focused on using green hydrogen and ammonia as tools for decarbonisation. India is an excellent location for this project, as due to 6GW of renewable assets in India, Sembcorp will be able to produce green hydrogen on a large-scale at a low-cost.
Other green fuel technologies being developed, such as emissions reduction for port operations, green ammonia and bunkering will also be taken into account by the JV. Plus, the experience Sembcorp has with renewables, and the skills and knowledge BPCL demonstrates for the petroleum sector and infrastructure will be used by other projects.
G Krishnakumar, Chairman & Managing Director, BPCL, commented, “BPCL's collaboration with Sembcorp marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a sustainable tomorrow. BPCL will leverage its combined aspirations, expertise and resources, to jointly explore the development of innovation-led, best-in-class renewable energy and green hydrogen solutions for supporting India's ambitious climate goals and our own aspiration to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 in Scope 1 and 2. BPCL is committed to building a robust renewable energy portfolio, with a target of 10GW, to meet the energy needs of tomorrow and become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040.”
Vipul Tuli, President & CEO, Renewables, West, and CEO, Hydrogen Business, Sembcorp, mentioned "Sembcorp’s collaboration with BPCL seeks to support renewable energy and green hydrogen development in India. With Sembcorp’s renewables expertise and BPCL’s strength in the petroleum sector, we look forward to identifying opportunities to help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors. Sembcorp is committed to delivering scalable, low-carbon solutions for a sustainable future."
