Major ammonia-to-hydrogen project to be led by Gemserv

Gemserv has announced that they are leading a consortium, which is leading the ‘world’s largest and most efficient’ ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion project.

This conversion project will operate through the ammonia cracker and purification technology converting the ammonia to hydrogen. This technology is worth £6.7m and the project will be supported through a UK Government funding scheme, which is highly competitive.

The consortium working on this project is also in collaboration with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The aim of this project is to deliver 200kg of hydrogen intended for transport on a daily basis. This consortium also consists of several other companies, including H2SITE, Equans, YARA and finally, the University of Birmingham. The collaboration will involve Gemserv developing and leading the project, whilst utilising the expertise of key technology providers. Gemserv will also liaise with the organisations that will be developing the ammonia supply chain and engineering-procurement-construction (EPC).

Chief Executive of Gemserv, Alex Goody, said that ‘the Ammogen project will prove that ammonia “can be part of the solution.”’ He added, “This project is about finding solutions for the transportation of hydrogen across vast distances, essential in underpinning the hydrogen economy.”

Technical Director of H2SITE, Jose Medrano, commented, “[The] Ammogen project is a steppingstone for H2SITE, as it validates the fundamental technology we’ll use to scale to tonnes per day ammonia cracking in the next two years.”
